Sister Pat immerses children in nature and art

Sister Pat Lupo Nature Camp June 2025

Long-time, award-winning advocate for the environment Sister Pat Lupo organized a week-long Nature Camp for local children. The program is sponsored by the Housing Authority of the City of Erie and was offered as one the summer programs at the Kids Club at the John E. Horan Garden Apartments in Erie.

On Monday, the dozen kids and chaperones did orienteering at Scott Park with organic farmer Tess Frawley of Eat Your Yard; Tuesday featured nature prints and hiking with Neighborhood Art House teacher Sarah Howard at Glinodo Center followed by dinner with the Benedictine Sisters at Mount St. Benedict Monastery, an adventure for both sisters and the kids. On Wednesday the campers travelled to Spartanburg to visit an alpaca farm that also raises goats, sheep, and chickens. The art project was felting a rock with farmer and fiber artist April Cox. Dinner follwed at McDonalds in Union City. The week ended with hiking and exploring forest and creek critters and their habitats. They especially enjoyed exploring Mill Creek at Headwaters Park with Environmental Educator and Park Manager Kristen Currier.
